How do you sweeten tea made from tea bags and avoid the bitter taste?

I make tea at work using Lipton tea bags and hot water. No matter how much sugar I add I can never taste it. Also if I should add lemon the tastes become bitter. Any suggestions on making some great tea?

  1. David C says:

Add the tea bags after you boil the water.
To avoid bitterness don’t squeeze the tea bags.
To two quarts of tea add at least a cup of sugar.
I’ve used lemonade mix instead of lemon and sugar.

Try honey, or I like a bit of cream to cut that bitterness.

Or brew up a bunch from loose tea leaves if you like that better and bring it in a bottle. Stick that in the fridge or a lunch cooler. Warm it up as needed.

Perhaps try something like Sweet and Low, or another non sugar sweetener? Sweeteners like that usually have more sweetness per amount.

  4. coco says:

You probably need at least a cup or more of sugar. Sugar takes a while to dissolve. Keep stirring for a few minutes until all the sugar is dissolved. Then you should be able to taste it. Make sure its not just floating on the bottom.

And adding lemon counter acts with the sugar so that might be part of the problem. But if you get the right amount of lemon and enough sugar, it will be delicious. Its basically just trial and error until it tastes right.

interesting, I made sweet tea at my culinary school , from tea bags, and it was fine try doing a 2 cups of sugar per gallon ratio. lemon should be added very sparenly as it is bitter (it is lemon) just about 1/2 a lemon to a gallon should do it like 1/8 to a glass. Best of luck. also you might try getting a gallon of bottled water if it like over the top better bring that to your managers attention maybe a water filter would help. unless it isnt a top priority. I dont know the situation of your tea thing if it is for you or for customers or both and or if you have gotten complaints on the tea from customers. anyway good luck

  6. Eagle1 says:

Perhaps you let the tea bag steeping too long!

bring some honey with you and a few lemon slices I hope that you like your tea with lemon , I do! the lemon will remove the bitterness of the tea making it lighter .

use your same method, but don’t let it steep for as long… remember to add the sugar when the tea is still warm

i don’t know usually i have my tea with one tea bag hot water two teaspoons of sugar and a slice of lemon in a large mug let it sit for two or three minutes then drink and seems to be fine not bitter at all

  11. Mr. Grummp says:

If your tea is bitter, you’ve let it steep too long. Five minutes max is sufficient.
