What is the difference between tea bags and loose tea?

Someone told me that loose tea is better than tea bags, is this true?

  1. war3rd says:

Basically, lower quality fannings (broken pieces) are used in tea bags for both cost and and ease of use, while larger leaves are reserved for loose tea. They brew differently, so often loose tea will make a higher quality cup, less bitter and more well rounded (if brewed properly). Loose tea allows the water to circulate better, evening out the steeping.

    1) the bag

    2) yes

i assume your question is about quality….loose tea usually is the better buy as well as having more variety.

  4. beebs says:

oh, so much better. You can put tea leaves in a special ball designed to steep the leaves, or you can use a strainer. Tea bags have usually been bleached with chemicals and will leach into the drink. You can also control the strength of the tea much better. Try it, you will notice the difference!

  5. Merrill Howard Kalin says:

one time when I was at summer camp some guys held me down, and teabagged me for about 20 minutes, and I hated it.

Loose tea are much better than tea bags. Loose tea are also fresher. Tea bags are processed and all taste are very uniformed. With loose teas you can measure whether you like it strong or not.

  7. Amanda M says:

Loose tea is so much better. When you use loose tea and the mesh ball it give the tea more room to "move around", so the water just smothers the loose tea. a tea bag doesn’t give the water to much room to work with.

I don’t think there is a difference. I have used both and tea bags are way less messy.

  9. tracy b says:

the difference is that loose tea isnt in a bag which results in the tea ending up in your cup, producing a stronger cup of tea

  10. Drew says:

That’s generally true, but there are exceptions. It’s still much easier to buy good loose-leaf tea than it is to buy good tea in bags, but there’s been a recent attempt to market high-end bagged teas that are quite good indeed. Some of them are made of fancy sorts of heat-resistant plastic instead of paper. Naturally, they cost somewhat more than just buying loose tea, but some feel that the convenience is worth it.

I generally buy tea in tins (Twinings Earl Grey is an old favorite) or loose in bags from a specialty tea place. If you’re buying very exotic tea, like Lapsang Souchang, you’re better off buying it loose from a proper tea seller than at the supermarket.

  11. Mrs Apple says:

Loose tea is just tea leaves. Tea bags are loose tea in bags. The only difference is the bag. Loose tea is a little more pure than tea bags because there isn’t anything that comes between your tea leaves and your water.
